At last Committee meeting it was proposed that Club should purchase bike boxes for benefit of members. Will be hired out for a modest Sum ( just enough for u to look after box). Need suggestions on what box to buy as saw many boxes at marmotte and not sure what best. Suggestions welcome

Myself and James had the Alan bike box, I was really happy with it. The last box I had was a real struggle getting a 58cm frame in, but this box had no issues.

it is actually cheaper buying through sigma sports than buying direct.

Good idea! As you say Charlie there are a lot of different boxes to choose from.

My own opinion is based on looking around this year considering buying one myself.

The BikeBox Alan seems to be a good choice. It is big, robust and seems to last. It is quite heavy but not excessively so. It is quite expensive though.

The PBK is similar to the BBA but a lot cheaper and perhaps a bit flimsier (probably fine though).

The Polaris, which I hired, is very good as well. It is smaller than the others but fine. It seems very robust with good locks and hinges. Has a detachable pull strap, which I found useful.

These also look quite good: a different style to the others but less than half the price of the  BBA. They look like the one that Canyon sell (Ian McG had one).

I second Darryl suggestion of the B&W Bikes box, in terms of cost & what looks to me like pretty robust construction (I think Iain McGinty can confirm that).

I have experience of the Bike Box Alan, they are great but cost a lot of money especially if we have to buy a number of them  :-(

Looking at the dimension of the B&W & a "larger" version of the same brand, we could possibly get 4 of the larger ones & 2-3 of the smaller (depending of course on our budget).

Here are the dimensions of the 2 respective models:

Large interior size - 125(L) x 85(W) x 32(H)cm - 16kg - £280

Small interior size - 108(L) x 79(W) x 25(H)cm - 13kg - £200

Going by the review, these seems to be a great buy, the smaller one would probably fit bike sizes up to a 55cm frame (measuring top tube size)

Would Iain McG like to add his view/comment on the one he's got (assuming it is the same one)

Cheers

If I had the money, I would probably get this one - The Topeak PakGo X ....... it even has a simple "work stand" :-) It's like your bike is travelling First Class!

But ......... it's crazy expensive though :-/

Thanks to all for bike box suggestions . At AGM last night the majority view was that purchasing bike boxes was not the best use of club funds therefore that plan is back on the shelf. However it has been agreeed that we carry out a costing for installing broadband at club rooms and a costing for fixing existing tacx  flow turbos & purchasing turbos equipped for power. I will open a thread for this. Also looking  for volunteers for maintenance of our bike equipment and to introduce more bike maintenance workshops. A number of members have shown an interest in this and again can be discussed on thread and hopefully we will get some working groups in place to take these ideas forward
