PaulL reacted to Darryl Gunson in Congratulations to Eileen McGlynn
Just read that Eileen has won another Olympic medal in the tandem pursuit at the Paralympics. Congratulations to Eileen, who many of you will remember is a past member of JWCC. I have fond memories of some of the runs when she and Denis (White) turned out on the tandem. Chapeau!

PaulL reacted to P McDonald in Arran again and again !
Thought it worth mentioning another astoundingly brilliant day on Arran where 5 of the 7 riders were JWCC members (although one missed the memo to wear the jersey😀)
3 new inductees to the Hall of Fame were Sean Delaney, John McGivern and Mark Cushley who are all regular Saturday bunchers, repeaters in the Hall of Fame were David Archibald, Richie Provan, Garry Dunn and myself so chapeau to all,
5 of our number finished a bit ahead and took the Island Loop KOM by a chunky margin on a near perfect day with virtually no wind. The weather was so brilliant it was a shame all we could really view was a 700x25 GP5000 and a rear hub !!
The legend grows and I see another double taking shape in my crystal ball. Get training hard because you know you want to,
Forza Arran Forever !

PaulL reacted to Darryl Gunson in NEW: Wednesday evening social rides
Hi folks
Now that we were getting used to riding in groups again, we have decided to resurrect the Wednesday evening social rides.
These rides will take place most weeks, weather permitting, and are aimed at all members, whether they have just joined the club and want to meet people and practice riding with a group, or established members who just fancy a nice easy social ride.
The rides will start and finish at the club rooms at Miller Street. Wheels rolling at 6.30
Distance: approx 30 miles.
Pace: social/as dictated by ride leader, to accommodate all participants.
The route is: down the track to Glengarnock; over the national cycle route to Barmill; Gateside; Howood; club rooms
Hope to see some of you on Wednesday
Cheers

PaulL reacted to Kenny MacDonald in Davie Bell road race?
Remember riding this in early 80s Robert Millar won it from Drew Brunton in what would have been a photo finish these days . They escaped at heads of Ayr when a horse unseated its rider and split race apart . I was in the break chasing and when we were coming down the Nick of Balloch John Clanky Clark was descending like a demon we overtook the motorcycle marshals who couldn't keep ahead of us on the bends . Remember a hairpin bend with a bridge and my bars scraping the wall as we came round as my back wheel skidded on loose gravel . Cracking race with some tough climbs . Ivy had Clanky , Ian Thomson , Davie Whitehall and Jim Mcmanus who took it in turns to attack break all the way in from the NIck . Managed to get a 6th place on my first time riding it .

PaulL reacted to DavidC in Farewell
Sad to hear your news Davie, been on quite a few adventures over the years together be it Cyclecross, Audaxing, Pyrenees and the Amstel Gold, and I hope we have a few more adventures.
Iv'e never quite kept up with your pace apart from when we got lost at the Amstel gold, or when we stop for beer, I will email you a few pics I have looked out, and also a video of you singing in Dutch with Paul & Eric...what a night.

PaulL reacted to thejanullrichdietplan in Saturday 3rd October 10am Zwift ride
Weather forecast for Saturday doesnt look good so how about a Zwift ride up Ventoux? It's a long climb, aiming for 3 w/kg all the way up. If this is too hard, or too easy then you can adjust your weight
Then the fun bit. After a regroup at the top (if you want to smash it up the climb and then have a break feel free to do that) it then becomes a race to the bottom. Descent will take about 15 minutes.... DQd if you start ahead of the beacon.
Remember to follow Johnstone Wheelers on the companion app if you want an invite
Before the event is due to start make sure you have opened up the game and can see your avatar and bike - you can ride about on any course or just sit waiting. When it is 5 minutes to the start of the meetup a dialogue box will appear on the bottom left of the screen - select that and it will take you to the start of the group ride.

PaulL reacted to P McDonald in ARRAN
Latest news from Arran ….
Me, Jan McT and my daughter Emma set out for an SA today on the 7am ferry. Knowing the relative form of the three of us I thought it was pretty much a sure thing. However, every day is a schoolday as they say. The wind was ENE and Jan and I conferred and concluded clockwise was the best option. In all these years neither of us have ever done it with an Easterly or similar wind and we discovered the hard way that it is pretty dang hard. We both produced higher normalised power than 4 weeks ago when we did a pretty comfortable SA and Emma worked with us toe to toe until the final 3 to 4k yet we were about 7 mins slower and were not allowed to embark the ferry as they had just locked the gates ! So it doesn't count
I think I speak for Jan as well in that we knew it was a lot harder even before seeing the numbers, with the exception of the south side run it was basically head or cross head all the way and it felt like it.
I was gutted for Emma as she really deserved the SA on her first attempt with a really strong ride.
There will be plenty more opportunities

Had this issue with Garmins spiking, started using the HRM GEONAUTE DUAL ANT buy here which you can get in Decathlon and I haven't had any spikes at all while watching Netflix!

PaulL reacted to Richard in Cyclocross races on YouTube
In case you've missed them, there are loads of free-to-watch 'cross races on GCN's racing channel on YouTube. Ideal if you're killing time on the turbo (or just killing time.)
Highly recommended: the women's Waaslandcross Sint-Niklaas, and the men's Loenhout round of the DVV Trofee**.

PaulL reacted to AlanT in Confined Events 2020
I have attached the schedule of confined events ( and some open ones) for the coming season. Confined event awards are open to all club members, and are an excellent way to introduce new riders to the mysteries and dark arts of Time Trialing.
This year, I have introduced 2 new courses for the League of 10. One is the Hilly course, and the other the restricted gear course at Gateside. These will be one of events within the league of 10, which will be mostly on the Westferry, as normal.
If you want to give TT-ing a shot, these are the events to try.

You should be fine with the main bunch all the way.......you go at a good enough pace and make an effort so the bunch should slow to your pace when/if you start struggling.

PaulL got a reaction from Iain67 in Flanders 2020
I would recommend dong the 179km route, On the long route the first 50km is riding on cycle tracks(2 abreast with traffic calming)/main roads escorted by police motorbikes in the dark. You have to leave about 4am? to cycle to bus then have 1-2 hours coach to start, done this twice and probably the worse two hours on a bike, followed by 179km of perfection. Skip the bull and enjoy the real route.
