  1. I'm looking for a 24" road bike for one of my friends who is doing the Etape Caledonia. He's only ever been on a mountainbike and has been talked into doing this by his pals. He's 6'4" so I think that's the right size! If anyone wants to sell or lend him a bike please reply............................
  2. Circuits began last Thursday. If anyone is interested come along for a workout this week. A few new torture devices have appeared in the clubrooms of late................
  3. Hi All, circuits will start at 7pm and just because I'm not super fit at the moment doesn't mean it won't be hard...........you get out what you put in!
  4. I'll be passing on Kenny and Davie's comments to Dawn.......she's looking forward to friday night polo sessions. The astro turf is much quicker and it's harder when you fall. Be scared, be very scared!

    Vote for Sustrans!

By the way, Danny is a retired gentleman, a seasoned tourer and a Sustrans ranger. I stopped to chat to him on the track at Fenwick/Eaglesham and he offered me a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit. If anyone wants to contact him give me a shout as he gave me his number in case of questions.
  6. Hi Everyone, I met a chap called Danny Sutherland last week and he asked that I pass on this message. "£50 million, four competitors and only one winner! Sustrans needs you to vote for Connect2 in the Big Lottery Fund's: The People's £50 Million Lottery Giveaway coming soon. Online voting opens on Monday 26 November at www.thepeoples50million.org.uk. Lorraine Kelly will be championing Sustrans' Connect2 on an ITV1 show on Tuesday 4 December. Telephone voting will begin on Friday 7 December. Please register now (on website - www.sustransconnect2.org.uk ) or by texting 'Connect2' to 80010. We'll then send you a reminder to vote for Connect2 when the time comes. Connect2 will revitalise walking and cycling in 79 communities across the UK by creating new routes for the journeys we all make every day. Crossings and bridges will be created over busy roads, railway lines and rivers, linking into new networks of local paths to get you to where you want to go. If Connect2 wins, millions of you will be able to travel in a healthy and environmentally-friendly way to the shops, school, work, and the park or to see family and friends. With 79 Connect2 schemes around the UK there's likely to be one near you. If you want Connect2 to win - please register today so we can send you a reminder to vote for Connect2." Go on, you know you want to! It's in a good cause and I'm sure all of us have used cycle tracks at one point. It would make a massive difference to cycling.....www.sustransconnect2.org.uk

    circuit training

Hi All, I'm afraid due to a cold I won't be at circuits tonight. Can someone with keys open to clubrooms for everyone (hopefully Kenny Mac or Kenny S will be there anyway). See you next week. Kat
  8. Well, the first circuit training will be on Tuesday 24th at 7pm. It's up to you how you do it. In past years we have completed a warm up then spent 1 minute on each 'exercise' and gone round the hall 2 or 3 times but some prefer to miss out some exercises (injuries, pain, etc!) and some people do 1 circuit then sit on a turbo for a while. Fully flexible and you can see to yourself as you wish. There is a common worry that George (army major Hamilton) may do a group warm-up but that has yet to be confirmed.............
  9. Hi All, now's the time for some indoor training to strengthen and stretch the bits that don't get much use during the cycling season. I'm not sure what happened last year but this year we plan to arrange the clubrooms for circuit training and/or turbo training, depending on your fancy. We've got some new equipment plus the usual torture machines to hand. This can be held on a Tuesday or a Thursday so I'd like a show of hands to see what suits the majority best. It's well worth while as I'm sure anyone who does some off-season strength training can testify and you get to hang out with your clubmates!
  10. Hi All, George (new club champion) will be available for timekeeping duties for this weeks TT. It'll take a few weeks for him to recover from his championship winning performance (it's his age apparently) so he thought he'd do his turn. Hopefully the weather will be good!!!!!

    Back again!

Hi, I'm back! Thanks to everyone for their support, it was brilliant! I had limited access to the internet and so my reports were a little irregular to say the least but I did read all your comments as often as possible (even if I couldn't reply sometimes). They helped a lot to keep me focused on what the Games are all about and remind me what a great club I'm in!!!!! My tme in Oz was excellent with the best bit being the Games at the end. It was really exciting and the best experience. I'm very happy with my results. A p.b. in the pursuit with 5th place and 9th in the TT is pretty cool. My favourite was the pursuit as it was sooo paced that it was enjoyable. All the credit for that has to go to Graeme Herd as he talked me through the pursuit from start to finish the day before and spent a lot of time pacing my laps so that I'd remember for the next day (yes, my memory is that bad!). The TT was hellish - what can I say? The course was harder than it looked and apparently I was shown in all my snotty glory at the end, although I've not yet seen that.... My first text after the TT was from Dawn (twin) and it said something like 'well done, you snotted all over the TV!!!!' oops, but at least the snot did impress her. In my defence, it shows I was trying! Totally cool and thoroughly enjoyable. Thanks again to everyone. p.s. Can Kirsteen post some contact details?

    quick update

I've not had internet access for a while but now I'm in the village I'm connected again! The Games Village is great. Loads of different athletes from all different cultures doing things their own way! The best was the boxers from Ghana chanting/singing as they jogged down the road at 5 a.m.! It sounded great. Just now I'm mainly training at the velodrome in between eating and sitting around. At this stage we're not allowed to walk around in the heat too much but our training is tapering so there's a bit of fill-in time. George is over now though so I can meet him on my days off (hopefully). I'm starting to get a bit nervous about the pursuit as it's a pretty intense event. 12,000 people just looking a two people on the track - aargh! I'm sure I'll cope if i can still get on my bike by then after eating all the free food! Mmmmm. I hope everyone back home is still out cycling in the -2 degrees. (George told me that's what it was before he left). It's to be 36 degrees here tomorrow. Yeuch! Glad I'm in the velodrome!
  13. Wahey, now I know I've finally made it. My own space in the forum to play with! I've been doing tons of training lately and now I'm a bit run down to say the least. I've been doing a lot of bunch racing on the track, maybe twice a week, and my other miles and training round about that. There don't seem to be any time trials or pursuit races in Oz just now so I've not competed in my main events yet but I'm hoping to get in a team for a triathlon so I can do the time trial bit. Here's hoping as the TT bike is looking lonely! Melbourne CG Track On Saturday we went into Melbourne to race on the Vodaphone track which is the one to be used in the Commonwealth Games. I was very impressed and really liked it. It has quite a lot of seating and good facilities for changing (unusual in tracks I've been racing on in Oz!). It's also beside a lot fo the other CG facilites and stadiums so the area will be buzzing on race days. The race we went to was called the Austral festival which is famous over here and a local guy from Ballarat, who we go out training with, won the big Wheelrace. That was worth watching! The racing for women was really poor, we got a 12 lap (3km - same as a pursuit) scratch race and a 6 lap wheelrace (handicap event) and that was it! Not really worth the travelling. My legs were pretty tired and my intention of zooming off with 8 laps to go turned into towing the bunch for a lap and then giving someone else a go on the front! Oops. Kate managed to get 2nd in the Scratch race even with tired legs so that was good. On the Sunday I got up early and cycled up to an APR in a town called Wallace. The only problem was that we (Ivor Reid and myself) got lost and were running out of time so we went pretty fast to get there (it took an hour and a half of hard work to find the place) and then we jumped into group 4 of 6 as soon as we arrived and I was immediately dropped and TT'd for 40km on my own. Needless to say Sunday afternoon was spent like a zombie wandering around the house - similar to many Sunday afternoons back home after the bunch ride (except I don't have to do any ironing for work on the Monday). On Monday I was down the local track practicing my starts on the pursuit bike. The local track is really good and pretty much unused. It's a 250m track similar to Meadowbank but with a concrete finish rather than timber. The centre oval is overgrown and it even has some weeds poking through the concrete on the track (Kate uses one particularly large weed as a marker to accelerate for her flying 500m efforts - we call it Ben). It would be a dream for the Scottish track rider to have this track in their area but the Ozzies prefer the larger 400m + outdoor tracks for racing. It has to be said that the larger tracks suit me better for bunch racing as well!!!! I had yesterday off. Phew. It was decided that myself and Kate (Cullen) were lacking in finances so we went up to the local Sovereign Hill and panned for gold. We found a few flecks which we put in a small bottle but not enough to make our fortune so we gave up and instead went for a tour down a goldmine. This is the local attraction and not a figment of my imagination. There is a 1850's gold prospectors town set up with loads of actors and shops and tours and basically everything you can imagine that would happen in a gold town. An excellent way to spend the day! Today I've been looking forward to using my TT bike in anger on the road but it is blowing a gale and going down the road sideways wasn't appealing to me so I had to return and attempt the turbo instead - booo!!!! But at least it's warm and sunny and I can do the turbo in the garden and not in the livingroom.......... that's if I can get my hr above 164...............

    Fixed wheel

This is a great idea as the new concrete outdoor track will open in Glasgow next year with a track league being held every week everyone needs to get a fixed gear bike so they can play on the track. It's great fun and you don't get hit by cars!!!!!!
  15. Back again. Sorry George, I forgot to tell you but really didn't think you'd notice if it was only for a few months. I left plenty of whisky and the hillwalking gear is still there so you'll survive. However, I am a bit worried about the cats......... Anyway, since returning from Tas I've had the cold which is now much better but meant that sadly I missed all the 'Bay Crits' and could only go into Melbourne and Geelong with the rest of the team and lie in the sun while they knocked their pan in on 1km circuits brushing shoulders with the best cyclists in the world! I did a bit of shopping, ate numerous ice cream cones, lay around in 30 degree heat and dabbled in the very competitive sight seeing circuit. But, now I am almost fully recovered and so training will start in earnest again this week. We've got a track in Ballarat which we'll use and a motorbike for motorpacing so i think I may be getting a lot of miles in! There are also quite a few races arranged in different places which I'll update on as they arise. The house has lost two people (Tracey and Gary) and they have been replaced with the national track coach, Ivor Reid and Elaine (his wife). Ivor will no doubt be hatching lots of pain sessions on the track in between his sunbathing (of which he seems equally keen). And before any of you doubters (Stevie) say anything. It has been lovely weather this week. Thirty odd degrees every day with a slight breeze - perfect weather to consume ice cream but not hot chocolate. I've even been to the seaside 5 times (Bay crits - beside the sea, geddit?). Aaaah. I'm certainly not missing those council buldings and Kenny, stop reminding me! Last thing. Evan won the Bay crit series support race (5 crit series). He and James were in this race rather than the pro one because they are obviously not in a pro team. Phil Anderson was commentating the crits and in his words - the support crits are much harder than the pro crits as they are eyeballs out from the start whereas the pro one is controlled. Therefore this was a brilliant win and everyone can ignore the doubters on the Braveheart forum because I'm here and saw it and it was brutal! He did brilliantly and Team Uno who adopted them provided good support (mainly James McCallum). Evan is looking well good for the Games road race!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! People have to remember that the internet sites are read by us over here and we don't need negative comments. Speak soon.
