Stuart

I ride 50:14 which is 96 inches approx , likely to change it to 52 :15 which is 94 inches , gearing depends on what you want it for a lot of riders like riding a big front ring so they get a road cadence, others ride a smaller gear to improve leg speed

So anything that gives you 90 to 94 inches would be good

I use a 51x15 (91.8") that seems to be a bit smaller than alot adults choose to race with, but bigger than the restricted gear that juniors and youths are capable of kicking the adults arses with.

A 48 chainring is a pretty versatile one  - with a 14 tooth sprocket it gives you a big gear but not too huge that you cant get on top of it and with a 15 it gives a smaller gear and something spinny but not too small that you will be spinning out at a drop in.

The hire bikes run 48-16, which is fine for what they are. Like Ian, I run 50-15 which is about 10% higher than the hire bikes. I've tried going to 14 a few times, and while I like the extra inches, it's much harder to spin up or slow down.
