2023 Subscriptions stuart10ant Posted November 25, 2015 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted November 25, 2015 Thinking of building up a track bike, but unsure of what gearing to go for. Likely a 48 chainring, Whats people experience and advice for rear sprocket size?? Thanks
2023 Subscriptions P McDonald Posted November 25, 2015 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted November 25, 2015 48-14 is popular for track league racing at group B kind of speeds. Which would be about 29mph. If your plan is for longer endurance sessions then still ok or might consider 48-15. I could lend you 15 sprocket to try. 2023 Subscriptions XXX Posted November 25, 2015 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted November 25, 2015 Stuart I ride 50:14 which is 96 inches approx , likely to change it to 52 :15 which is 94 inches , gearing depends on what you want it for a lot of riders like riding a big front ring so they get a road cadence, others ride a smaller gear to improve leg speed So anything that gives you 90 to 94 inches would be good

2023 Subscriptions thejanullrichdietplan Posted November 25, 2015 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted November 25, 2015 I use a 51x15 (91.8") that seems to be a bit smaller than alot adults choose to race with, but bigger than the restricted gear that juniors and youths are capable of kicking the adults arses with. A 48 chainring is a pretty versatile one - with a 14 tooth sprocket it gives you a big gear but not too huge that you cant get on top of it and with a 15 it gives a smaller gear and something spinny but not too small that you will be spinning out at a drop in. 2023 Subscriptions AlanT Posted November 26, 2015 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted November 26, 2015 The hire bikes run 48-16, which is fine for what they are. Like Ian, I run 50-15 which is about 10% higher than the hire bikes. I've tried going to 14 a few times, and while I like the extra inches, it's much harder to spin up or slow down.
