You are invited to take part in a research study. The study is organised by the Head Injury Research Group, led by Professor Tom McMillan at the University of Glasgow. They are carrying out studies to investigate the long term effects of head injury. In this study they are looking at effects of concussion in retired elite rugby players. They are comparing rugby players to 'controls' who are similar in age and background. If you have not participated in organised contact sport beyond school level and have no history of head injury other than up to one concussion, they would like to invite you to take part.

You will be invited to attend for a single assessment lasting 60-90 minutes. This will involve: (i) a brief interview about recent health and history of head injury (ii) questionnaires about psychological wellbeing; (iii) tests of cognition such as concentration and memory; (iv) basic physiological measurements such as blood pressure and lung capacity; (v) a small blood sample which they will test for a variety of markers and genes that may be of interest following head injury.

The project has been reviewed by the Scottish Rugby Union and by the University of Glasgow College of Medical Veterinary and Life Sciences Ethics Committee. You can contact Jessica Wainman-Lefley who will be arranging and carrying out the assessments: [email protected] (0141 211 0651); or Professor Tom McMillan [email protected] (0141 211 0354); or Dr Willie Stewart [email protected] (0141 354 9535) who are organising the research.

Thank you for considering this request to take part in the study.
