Further to this, by popular demand, the first APR training ride will be on Sunday 2nd April. We will use the Greenacres circuit. First group will be off at 10.30. We will meet at the clubrooms at 9.30 and have a gentle cycle over. There will be generous time gaps for the early group (s). After the event folk are invited back to the clubrooms ( as per Gerard’s post) for food, and cycling on the big screen.
Hope we can get a good turnout!

In a new event for the club we will be having a Flanders themed day on Sunday 2 April.  Thanks to the tireless and unrelenting efforts of the highly skilled Johnstone Wheelers I.T. division we will have the Tour of Flanders available to watch in the clubrooms after our various club runs.  There will also be some catering to enjoy as well - yes there will be sausage rolls!
There are the three ride groups available, so please anyone organise a route in the appropriate WhatsApp group for anyone to join in.  Aim to be back at the clubrooms for about 1300h to 1330h and plan accordingly.  Include a cafe stop if desired, but if you have a waffle a picture must be posted up.
As this is a social event it is an excellent opportunity for you to introduce a potential new member to the club.  So please bring along a guest for the day and we can welcome them.

    Hello fellow Wheelers,
How’s youse all doing! It’s been a while since I made a new build, so I thought it’s about time I make another one just before Xmas 🙂   So far in my life, there’s THREE things I thought I would never do but end up doing it anyway 🙂 1st one was smoking, I hater people who smoked when I was young but ended up taking it up for a number of years, but thankfully I gave it up as soon as we were expecting our child ….. that was more than 20 years ago 🙂   The 2nd thing was drinking alcohol, I don’t “hate” a drink, just never really felt it was for me or the need to, but again I took it up later (be it not excessively) in the form of a few whiskey 🙂   Then there’s “gravel riding”, I mean, what’s all that about? A road bike with mountain bike features? Come on, pick a discipline & stick with it for god sake 🙂 Who needs tubeless & disc brakes on a road bike …….   ……. Well, I have just bought myself one & looking forward to trying it out after a bunch of Wheelers have been going out “gravelling” & it looks so much fun with brilliant scenery and all …. even on not so favourable weathers for road cycling 🙂   Also, I have to admit it as one  of the main reason why I want to try it out was because my favourite cycling brand - Campagnolo have brought out a new “gravel” specific groupset call the Ekar ……. 1-by too ….. got to try it 🙂    So, here’s a few snaps of my new frame set with the groupsets sitting on my work bench ready for some wrenching 🙂   The frame set is a Cinelli Zydeco aluminium with Columbus full carbon fork ….. not the lightest but relatively “cheap” compare to the groupset 🙂   Hope youse like it & I’ll get more pictures when it’s finished!   I’m coming soon “The Wheeler gravel boys” 🙂   Cheers   Chung

Back to track league after being ill for a couple of weeks. Feel like ive lost some fitness plus probably still some lingering effects of a virus so found it pretty hard. First couple of scratch races i  would get dropped, then back on, then dropped, then back on again. Unable to go with any accelerations so just rode steady in the race but not really a part of it. Points was a bit easier however i did nothing.  Last was a tempo -i didnt contest the early sprints then tried to get one about midway, failed, went back in the wheel and sat in for another lap then went again but much earlier. Got about a half a lap up on the chasers and managed to maintain that to the finish scoring a few times and getting the win. Tough night for me but at least ended on a positive note!

Thought it worth mentioning another astoundingly brilliant day on Arran where 5 of the 7 riders were JWCC members (although one missed the memo to wear the jersey😀)
3 new inductees to the Hall of Fame were Sean Delaney, John McGivern and Mark Cushley who are all regular Saturday bunchers, repeaters in the Hall of Fame were David Archibald, Richie Provan, Garry Dunn and myself so chapeau to all,
5 of our number finished a bit ahead and took the Island Loop KOM by a chunky margin on a near perfect day with virtually no wind. The weather was so brilliant it was a shame all we could really view was a 700x25 GP5000 and a rear hub !!
The legend grows and I see another double taking shape in my crystal ball. Get training hard because you know you want to,
    Forza Arran Forever !

Remember riding this in early 80s  Robert Millar won it from Drew Brunton in what would have been a photo finish these days  . They escaped at heads of Ayr when a horse unseated its rider and split race apart . I was in the break chasing and when we were coming down the  Nick of Balloch John Clanky Clark was descending like a demon we overtook the motorcycle marshals who couldn't keep ahead of us on the bends . Remember a hairpin bend with a bridge and my bars scraping the wall as we came round as my back wheel skidded on loose gravel . Cracking race with some tough climbs .  Ivy had Clanky , Ian Thomson , Davie Whitehall and Jim Mcmanus who took it in turns to attack break  all the way in from the NIck  .  Managed to get a 6th place on my first time riding it .

    An update
Glasgow Life will be making an announcement and going live tomorrow for track bookings through their systems.
In the first instance, all fully accredited riders will need to go through a 1hr revalidation session under Glasgow Life coaches. This will be a refresh of accred 1-4 skills
Once riders have been revalidated they’ll be able to book onto Coach-led sessions run by Glasgow Life (being announced tomorrow) and they’ll also be able to attend Club Coached Sessions.
Separately, I have secured 2hrs on the 14th June for rider revalidation (19:00-21:00). The first hour is for u16’s. The second hour is for 16yrs + and is limited to 6 places.
There are a few places available for JWCC members. Cost is £10. Must have own bike and kit and already have full accreditation
    First come first served

Any interest in COVID compliant track sessions at SCHV?
I’ve been in discussions with Glasgow Life and they will be re-validating, rather than re-accrediting, fully accredited riders.
The first session will be this revalidation. The following sessions will be run as Club sessions
Fully accredited riders with own bikes / kit only as Hire Station will not be open
Sessions will likely be Monday 7pm-9pm
Please confirm interest below before Saturday 15th May

KennyS reacted to Darryl Gunson in Wanted: lightweight alloy or carbon frame - medium or 54/55 top tube.
    Hi folks
I need a new (2nd hand) frame for my son, Robbie. Carbon or alloy, as long as it’s not too heavy and race type geometry.
    He’s about 5’10 so I’m thinking a medium or 54-55 top tube.
Im not looking for high end expensive stuff though. Just a decent 2nd hand race frame for a still growing lad.
Let me know if you’ve something that fits the bill that you’re willing to part with.
    Cheers
    Darryl

I expect that the majority of JWCC membership will already be fully aware of the latest Scottish Government lockdown guidance and restrictions associated with life at Tier 4. In simple terms - stay at home except for essential purposes, Police Scotland is legally enforcing the measures, for the weeks (months?) ahead.
Exercise is permitted in certain circumstances and close to your local area. British Cycling and Scottish Cycling have confirmed their positions on this and I have below lifted extracts from their web pages to assist any of our membership who choose to venture outside on their bikes at this time.
It remains the case that it is not possible for JWCC to safely run any events or organise group riding while there are such restrictions in place.
Stay local, keep riding, and come back smiling
While winter is often a trickier time to stay active due to the cold weather and short days, it’s a vital tool for safeguarding our physical and mental wellbeing during what is set to be another challenging few weeks ahead. Although the restrictions have been tightened, riders are still encouraged to get out and enjoy some fresh air – whether that’s for daily exercise or essential journeys.
    Mainland Scotland is at Level 4 and will now have to follow enhanced guidance including;

Household rules now apply to all activity (no sports bubble at Level 4) i.e. 2 people from a maximum of 2 households only. Sport can continue but it will be for a maximum of 2 people together unless under 12 years as they do not count towards the total (so more can take part).  Travel is restricted (as previously) but with ‘stay at home’ the key message and this has been put into law from midnight on 4 January 2020. There are however exemptions for sport, exercise and recreation and participants can still travel up to 5 miles from the boundary of a LA to take part in informal exercise such as walking, running, golf or cycling as long they abide by the rules on meeting other households noted above e.g. 2 adults from maximum of 2 households. Please ensure that you have reviewed the latest Scottish Government guidance if planning to take part in informal rides during this period.
Do your bit to minimise the risk of Coronavirus spreading by abiding with this guidance, the restrictions will not last forever.
    With thanks,
    Eric (Covid coordinator for JWCC)
