Katrina Hair

Previous to cycling I had no sporting interests, most of my time being taken up with my work as an Engineer.  It was only after I commenced University studies towards an Architectural Degree that my husband suggested cycling as a means of my keeping fit.  I purchased my first bike in 1999 and joined my local Club, The Johnstone Wheelers.  I quickly gained competence and, with encouragement from my Club, started to road race.
2002
At the beginning of this year I was awarded the title of Renfrewshire Sports Personality of the Year.
My main achievement for 2002 was competing for Scotland in the Commonwealth Games.  I raced in the Road Race and Time Trial disciplines.  In the road race, I was part of a 5-woman team who helped Caroline Alexander to a credible 5th place; in the time trial, I unfortunately suffered mechanical problems.
Most of my year was focused towards this goal but I still achieved some good results in the Domestic and International calendars.

Domestic Calendar
Cheltenham - British Cycling Federation Women’s Road Race - 1st
Moscow - Gallup British Cycling Federation Women’s Road Race – 1st sprint, 5th overall
British 25-mile time trial Championships, 5th overall and 1st team
British Road Race Championships - 8th
Scottish Road Race Championships - 1st
Scottish 25-mile Time Trial Championships - 2nd
British Cycling Federation Time Trial Championships - 10th

International Calendar
Bedford 2-day.  A two-day, three-stage race.  I achieved 4th and 5th in the first two stages and punctured on the third.
I competed in the Castilla ‘Y’ Leon in Spain, finishing the six-stage, five-day race in the middle of the standings.
Ster Van Walscheren, Holland.  A three-day, four-stage race.  I competed with no team as Commonwealth Games training and finished in the middle of the standings.

2001
Achieved titles of:
Scottish Road Race Champion
Scottish Hillclimb Champion
Scottish Women’s League Champion
Scottish ‘Olympic’ Time Trial Champion
During this year I also started to compete in British races, gaining top five placings in the three British Cycling Federation League races I competed in, as well as 10th in the British Road Race Championships.
At the end of 2001 I competed in an International race, The Trophee D’Or, in France, contested over six stages in five days. I finished half way up the field of 115, a very good result for a first stage race!

2000
My first year’s racing.
Top three placings in Scottish Women’s league races.
3rd in the Scottish Road Race Championships.

The Future - The future is very exciting.
Having cycled for only 4 years and raced for 3, I have made a very fast progression to an international racing level.  Every year I have gained experience and improved dramatically.
The year 2003 will see me competing on the track for the first time, a discipline which should suit my fast sprint and time-trialling ability.
In road racing I will achieve top placings at British level, which will hopefully lead to inclusion in the British Squad… …and then, who knows?

This award, Rider of the Year, was recently instituted to identify and honour the Club rider who improved most during the course of the previous year; as such, it does not necessarily identify the best rider in any particular discipline.
The winners of this award throughout the years are listed below, together with a few details they have given us of their cycling career to date.
