KIDS got on their bikes and enjoyed a ‘wheely’ good time when the Johnstone Jets held their very first Cyclocross event at the disused nine-hole golf course near Linwood Sports Centre.

More than 50 riders of various ages competed over a number of laps on challenging off-road circuits in the hope they would be crowned top wheelster on the day.

The event comprised of four age group races – for under-8s, under-10s, under-12s and under-16s – and, although the competition was fierce, it was also lots of fun.

Race organiser Kenny Steele said: “The event went really well, especially when you consider it was the very first one we’ve staged.

“The kids had a great time and we even had the winners and runners-up on podiums afterwards to soak up the glory.”

Winners of the Inter-Schools competition were the team from Bridge of Weir Primary.

Prizes were donated by Bikes by John, one of the club’s sponsors, and Endura Ltd, the club’s clothing supplier, while there was also further support from sponsors Bardon Concrete and Renfrewshire Leisure.

In addition, bosses at Morrisons supermarket in Johnstone provided bananas on the day to fuel the racers after their efforts.

The Johnstone Jets is a youth cycling club, established in March this year as the junior section of the Johnstone Wheelers, and is part of the national Go-Ride cycling development programme.

The club are running Saturday sessions throughout this month and any young cyclists who want to get involved will be made more than welcome.
