| Top | A message left by Philippe Haeghebaert | Hi there, I just returned from a great bike-holiday in the French Pyreneees. I was there staying together with other members of my Belgian club in a small and very nice hotel. And guess who I met... Darryl Gunson and Mark (sorry but don't remember his surname) from the Johnstone Wheelers. Both joined us for 2 days during our tours in the French cols...
I specifically have good memories on the second day where all of us (13 riders) where climbing the Tourmalet. Mark and Darryl where extremingly motivated to do their part of the work in the leading group while climbing the 17k to the top... yes, extremingly motivated... :-)
Well guys, you know what I mean... I hope you read this once you are back home and hope you enjoyed Hautacam, Col d'Aubisque and the other colls as much as I did.
Our time together was short but was fun!

| Top | A message left by Bill Hemphill | I am an old past member of the Johnstone Wheelers C C.
I was there when Billy and Rita Jones were members...the old memory for names (I'm 69 this year)is fading now but I was very friendly with Wullie Burns.
I have some photos which I will look out and scan and email to the club of some of our weekends such as at Rowerdennan.
I broke my back while out training one night and that put paid to my cycling but I still miss it and the many happy hours I spent in the company of the club on runs all over Scotland. Oh and those smokey tea drum-ups on Loch Lomond side LOL.
It's great to see the club has survived and prospered and I wish you all the best.
Take care,
Bill Hemphill. |
| Top | A message left by Paul Robertson | Hello everyone,
I am currently a student at Strathclyde University and have only very recently started getting into cycling. One of main reasons for this is that I am doing a charity ride in the Alps this summer to raise money for the Meningitis Trust as my cousin is affected by the disease.
For this event I have had to purchase everything from a bike to cycling socks and spare inner tubes. As you know, this has come at a cost.
I require a bike bag for the event and was just wondering if anybody would be generous enough to lend me one between the dates of 15-24th of July.
It would be very much appreciated.
Please reply to my email address paul.robertson@strath.ac.uk if you can help.
Thanks very much

| Top | A message left by Don Smith | Hello all:
Greetings from a Don Smith in Hawthorne, New Jersey in the United States. I think it is ironic the second greatest country in the world (sorry I am American) would have a bicycle memorial with my name in it. I really was amazed because I enjoy bike riding, I enjoy Scottish history, and well, I am named after another Don Smith (my father and hero).
I was hoping that someone can give a brief history as to who "Don Smith" was and why he has a race named in his honor.
Regards from "The Colonies,"

| Top | A message left by chris travis | congratulations...excellent website. bright cheerie and a wealth of information.
I recently obtained the Cumnock Challenge Cup awarded from 1951-1966 for the open tourist competition and noted that it was won by Johnston Wheelers members J Keller (1955 &1960) and M Ramsey 1959.
Interestingly the inside of the base band has also been engraved as the trophy had been reused. The names inside are all ladies. First awarded in 1932 to Miss M Gregory of Kodak Ltd. who went on to win again 4 more times (33,36,37,&38) There are gaps from 1940-46 and 1948-1950. It was originally presented by the Odeon & Gaumont Theatres. I would appreciate any further information about the rally and partricipants. |

Then as if that wasn,t bad enough Drew Wilson and Brian Smith arrived, not to mention Malky Little ! You had to be going well to just hang on when those guys started to move.
I had the pleasure of winning the Barrhead APR when I still lived in Barrhead.......some 3 stone and 20 years ago! Another successful JWCC promotion !
The website is a good idea : the wheelers are without doubt a large part of the history and folklore of Scottish cycling. Anyone know what became of jimsy Graham ? |

| Top | A message left by John Scott | Great web site. I was a member of JWCC 1956-57 and then in 1960-61 (after National Service). After that work made it too awkward to keep up cycling and I lapsed. I still have a bike and get out when I can. A fellow OAP at a spinfit class told me about the website. Brought back lots of memories. Glad to know the club is still going strong

| Top | A message left by Jim Anderson | Hi,
Just interested to see the name 'Johnstone Wheelers' again. I'm 57 years old now, but at one time I was a member Of 'Cumnock Ramblers' and still recall 'the Wheelers' being in great attendance at the 'Cumnock Rally' in the '50s.
Weren't your club colours brown and yellow?
Where could I obtain components to carry out a 'sympathetic' restoration of a 1962 Flying Scot? Anyone???
See you up the road!
(Maybe!)

Just a note to congratulate Aileen on her medal winning achievements and world records in Athens. I used to invigilate during her Maths exams at Strathclyde Uni. Hearing her name on the radio I thought, 'I recognise that name' then finding out it was her through watching highlights on the telly was fantastic.
All the best Aillen and hope you continue in your winning ways. Hope this message gets passed on.
P.S. Website is great by the way. |
| Top | A message left by Anthony Winton | i am the grandson of Ian Winton also known as john and was wondering where are the pictures of him?? as he still holds a record which some of scotlands greatest cyclists havnt beaten but yet all the pictures are young people in the club. I would like to know why there are no pictures of him even though he was a dedicated johnston wheeler. please reply!!
I replied to Anthony as follows -
.
Dear Anthony,
Thank you for your entry in our Guest Book.
I'm sorry you were unable to find any photographs of your Grandfather; there actually are two of him where he is part of groups of cyclists, photographs which will eventually appear if you keep clicking the refresh button on your browser. As the caption to the small images in the footer area of the website say -
"Images selected at random from the Club's archives." and
"To see the next in the series, click the browser's Refresh icon."
To provide regular visitors some variety in the display, there are a total of 100 thumbnail photographs and captions which are displayed, as the caption says, *at random*, which is perhaps why you did not see your Grandfather quite as quickly as you would have liked.
To let you view what we have without repeated page-refreshing, if you click on this link it will take you to a temporary page I wrote for you - [ URL followed ]
In the website footer area, there is also the text saying "If you can help the Club by adding to these archives, please let us know" so if you can indeed provide photographs and a biography of your Grandfather, I'd be only too keen to include it in this area.
I also have a section in the website specially for instances like your Grandfather's; it's -
http://www.johnstone-wheelers.co.uk/indiv_pages_display.php
and all I lack for your Grandfather, as a valued Wheeler, to appear here is his story, plus some photographs. The sooner you can send these to me, the sooner I can do it.
Yours sincerely,
Iain Lang.

| Top | A message left by Wyndham Davies | Hi there.
I was in the club for a few years around 1990.
Back in Scotland for a wee bit just now. Not cycling right now as I've broken both my bikes (damn I'm strong!) but should be back out sometime soon.
First visit to JWCC web-site and the picture in the wee box was me! Did a refresh and got Andy Lochrie doing his scouser impression. I'm traumatised for life now!
Anyways, hi to you all. |
| Top | A message left by jim welsh | I would just like to thank for such a wonderful life changing experience on Sunday. The last time I went up the Restand be Thankful was 1961,it was a scorching hot summers day ,I was 9 1/2 stone and demolished the field pushing a 52X18.I cant even remember it being much of a hill! I can understand now why you were so keen to take my bag to Dunoon.I think I might have turned back but I realised my car keys were in the bag.
I am rubbish at climbing now(something to work on over the winter) but I am probably worse at time trialing and when I saw the sign Dunoon 25miles I must admit I wavered slightly.Still we made to the finish thanks to Kennys encouragement although a more compassionate man would have let me in the broom wagon.Any its always the things that seem the worst at the time that stay with you and to me this was the best race I`ve ridden this year.Whether I will ride my bike again-who knows!!!

| Top | A message left by Sarah Fettes | Hi,
Website is really good :-)
Looking for advice?
My twin sister and I have previously been involved in athletics and rowing. I have taken a year away from sport (sure am feeling the pain trying to get back to training! but i'll do it) and would like to try my hand at cycling road and track. I'm 22 & don't have any experience of any cycling clubs but i would like to start even if it means my pride gets a bashing while i get back to fitness! I know from my rowing that you don't need the best piece of equipment when you are starting out but what would be a resonably o.k bike to possibly buy if i was to join you on the roads? (bearing in mind i've got a cheap mountain bike just now!) Don't worry, you won't shock me with prices - rowing just about broke my bank every season!
Would be great if somebody could reply with some info or a number i can phone. Would like to start for winter training time.
Many thanks
Sarah :-) |

Therefore anybody reading this might be able to help me out.
First time buyer of a road bike seeks relatively high spec machine with good sense of price, will travel within reason ( no promise of red rose)
Cheers ,

| Top | A message left by Graeme Reid | Dear JWCC,
Well, I finally found your web site and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was a member from about 81 to 88 (I think) before emigrating to the US in 1990. I'm still here after eleven years in Indiana and almost three in Wisconsin. I'm currently the Assistant Director at the West Bend Art Museum (www.wbartmuseum.com). I don't ride these days - busy schedule and a knackered back. I have many fond memories of my time with the club (picture 200 was taken in the very early 80s, and picture 195 was probably 88), and I think my name is on a few of the club trophies from the 80s! Nice new club colors too!
I'd like to say hi to all the Dooley family, the Smith family, Ian "Dud" Campbell, Jeff "the smoker" Rankin, Graham Herd, Bill Taylor, Jim Kennovin, Bill Spiers, Rita, Sylvia, Andy Lochrie, Nicky Calder, Scott ?, Tony ?, Drew, Graham MacDonald, Gordon Goldie, "Wee" Joe the butcher, John Fitzparick, Malky Little, Willie Gibb, Paul Tiggerdine, Mick Boyle, Tom and Elizabeth Clark and anyone else who remembers me, but whose name I can't remember!
Keep riding and I'd love to hear from any of the above.
With best wishes and warm regards,
Graeme |

Seriously though, it is good to see such an innovative site and I especially like the link to the SCU web site and the request to come back. I note that it is the friendliest club around and we all appreciate this at the SCU, just can't wait for Kenny and Iain to start being friendly. When I saw the photos of Wattie Buchanan I was reminded of the great runs and weekends we had in the 1940s before I went into the army and finally landed in Canada. I still cycle during the summer months and still have my Johnstone Wheelers badge, which I always where when I visit bike stores in Canada and the Usa. All the best. John. |

I had a conversation one day with some mates about how many great riders were Joytown Wheelies at one time or another in the past. Some were for a short time like Martin Williamson, Malky Little, James Millar or Zoe Thomas. Others were for a longer period - Bobby Melrose, Billy Gibb etc. How about a "Where are they now?" page? Is Graham Reid still in the USA, etc??? |
